Yggdrasil's Child

Story time: First day of spring 2014. It was quite the warm day which is not surprising being that North Carolina has some serious bipolar weather in the winter/spring time. You can start the week bundled up because the low is 15 then by Wednesday you're seeing highs in the 60s and 70s, but I digress. 

Jamie and I started the day shooting at an abandoned ampitheather which made for some great images but eventually we got kicked of the property for trespassing. (To be honest I didn't see a sign officer 😏) So we packed up and made our way to a spot I shot at a few years prior. It had some cool trails and a boat launch area...which brings us to this tree. After working together awhile Jamie and I had a pretty good connection. There were moments when we both knew what the other was thinking and an idea would come to life. When we came upon this tree this is what happened: my mouth dropped open and I started to point. At the same exact time J is stripping, runs over to the tree, does a quick swipe inside for webs, insects and wildlife then proceeds to tuck herself inside. Hence, this.

New year, new...

I have nothing prophetic to say about the new year. Nothing new to declare or proclaim. I'm sort of in a limbo right now, just trudging along until I find my stride again. Until then I'll stay sipping on bourbon and taking notes. 

Topless in November

After wearing a hoodie and leather jacket at the beginning of the week NC being NC, with it's bipolar fall weather, was treated to a warm day where I was comfortable in a t-shirt. That being said Donika got to enjoy having her jeep topless before the cold weather rolls back in. 

Fill The Frame

Something you may hear from some when it comes to composition is Fill The Frame. Get close. I have no problem with that. One whose work I admire, Ralph Gibson, does that with his nude subjects. I reference his book. Nude, for ideas. But, I've been lucky enough to shoot in some spots where filling the frame meant environment first then my subject. Most of the time the environment ended up being the main subject while the woman just added to it.

Scale. There is beauty in it. Many do it. Some don't do it enough. (just my opinion) When you get to use a big space take advantage of it.

Most of the time I visualize things as large prints that I would want to see hung up. You get a large landscape image with a beautiful woman in it all in one.

It comes down to preference. Everyone has their own style and I can respect that. I'm just making an observation. If you're lucky enough, though, to get a nude subject someplace out in the open try to create something that would make for a good story later.  

It's not for you, it's for them

The hair primping, the make up, the fear, the joy, the time. Sore from posing, possible sunburn, nosy fishermen, sand in places where it shouldn't be.

"She did them for me."  That would be a negative. 

She did them for her soul.

The last days of summer

That bite. You know what I'm talking about. That chill, crispness in the air where you think you can almost see your breath. The humidity has dropped and the air gone dry. The transition begins. Enjoy what little warmth is left.

I love when Em comes by. Her skin and her shape always photograph well. Plus she's always an eager subject and fun to work with. 

Negative Space

As the weather warms up the closer to the beach I get and the many beautiful forms that want to follow me there. The freedom of the openness, warm water, warm sun, warm sand...you get the idea. Then there is the sound of the water. Such a beautiful, soothing, healing sound. Soon, Lord Neptune, soon.
